National Trends on the Incidence and Clinical Outcomes of Stroke in Cardiogenic Shock
Navin Kapur, MD, FAHA, FACC, FSCAI, discusses results published in his recent paper on the incidence and clinical outcomes of stroke in ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) and cardiogenic shock (CS). Dr. Kapur is the executive director of the Cardiovascular Center for Research and Innovation at Tufts Medical Center, and he also leads the Cardiogenic Shock Working Group, a multi-center working group collecting data on all shock phenotypes to evaluate therapeutic outcomes. Dr. Kapur and his colleagues at Tufts Medical Center, and several other institutions, recently published this evaluation of 10 years of national trends on the incidence and clinical outcomes of stroke in CS-STEMI. The stroke rate in the cohort increased from 3.1% to 5.0% over this period. Studies have shown that patient comorbidities have increased over the years. The study also adjusted for difference in different comorbidities.
